America's Worst Politicians

King George III was “a Tyrant... unfit to be the ruler of a free people,” Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence exactly 238 years ago this week.

Tommy had it right.

Ever since then, Americans have been calling out their leaders. “Tyrant” was just the start. We’ve moved on to crook (Nixon), liar (Clinton), and moron (Dubya).

Whether or not you agree with the peanut gallery, there’s no denying that such written assaults on public honchos are as American as baseball, apple pie, and the iPhone.

So on this Independence Day, those closest to American politics — 50 writers and editors of the alternative press from across the land — have combined their collective genius. They’ve named 53 of the nation’s worst elected leaders from 23 of the largest states and the District of Columbia, then separated them into five categories: hatemongers, sleazeballs, blowhards, users and boozers, and horn dogs. And there’s more than just the usual stodgy Washington losers. Try Colorado sheriff Terry Maketa, who allegedly had sex with not one, not two, but three underlings and then lied about it. Or check out Idaho Senate GOP leader John McGee, who stole and crashed an SUV, admitted to drinking too much, and went to jail. Upon returning to the statehouse, he was accused of groping a female staffer.

Want a little old-school corruption? Florida’s governor, Rick Scott, who will be up for re-election soon, founded a health-care empire that was whacked with the largest Medicare fraud fine in U.S. history: $1.7 billion for stealing from the feds. There’s also Washington, D.C. council member Michael Brown, who once accepted $200,000 to stay out of an election and was later indicted after grabbing at a cash-stuffed duffel bag offered by an undercover FBI agent.

Of course, there are big names here too. South Carolina’s “Luv Guv” Mark Sanford made the list. So did Texas’ Green Eggs and Ham filibusterer Ted Cruz and Minnesota loon Michele Bachmann. Even pol wannabe Donald Trump snuck in a side door.

So before you head out for the fireworks or swig some American brew, consider this hall of shame. — CHUCK STROUSE

The rooster mcgees of the world will never let facts get in the way of their opinions. On the day before Obama took the oath of office, the great recession was almost two years old. The economy was shedding hundreds of thousands of jobs per month. The Dow was at 7000 and change. One million or more families were being foreclosed upon, and there were another two million in the wings. Millions had lost their health insurance because of losing their jobs. Bush had signed a huge, no-strings bailout for those very financial institutions that were partly to blame for the recession, and the execs in these companies began paying themselves and their henchmen huge bonuses. Our domestic auto industry was about to go belly-up, taking with it probably one quarter of what was left of our economy.

So what is it about President Obama that these people don't like? He didn't save the economy fast enough? The stock market is too high and they would prefer to make less on their portfolios? Too many people are working? Let's face it. As the comedian says, "You can't fix stupid."

Why do reporters always refer to Ted Cruz's possible run for the White House... last time I checked you had to be American born to be POTUS.

"our" politicians are merely a reflection of ourselves -- dipshits, dickheads, arseholes, and cunts. Murkah!

Obama = by far the worst politician in a long long time.

@RoosterMcGee Why? Probably because you are part of that idiotic group of conservatives that ask, "I just got through eating... why are you hungry?" I have yet to find anyone of compassion and intellect that did not think Obama was a great president. Ignorance doesn't know better. Idiocy doesn't want better. THE PRESIDENT IS BLACK, HE IS COOL, AND HE CARES! FCK U HATERS! ALL HATERS NEED TO BE THROWN TO THE ALLIGATORS!

@nayakno @RoosterMcGee ...because I look at facts instead of just going with the "cool" answer.  You are in the minority then because his approval rating is at a mere 44% as of today.  The lowest rating in 70 years.

Also, what does him being black have to do with anything?

@RoosterMcGee @nayakno

Once again, check your facts, G.W. Bush had an approval rating of 19%, Clinton 36%, G. H.W. Bush 29%, the lowest rating Obama has had was 39%, seems you're wrong again!

@Anse @RoosterMcGee @nayakno facts are facts!  Stimulus failure, largest deficit in US history, obamacare catastrophe, continually doing whatever he wants to do without Congressional approval, etc, etc, etc....the list could go on forever.

@RoosterMcGee @Anse @nayakno Still living in 2008 I see.  Here's an update:

1. More than 8 million enrolled in Obamacare.  What exactly is your definition of "failure".

2. 2009 federal deficit - 1.4 trillion dollars (thanks for nothing GOP spending).  Projected 2015 federal deficit - 516 billion dollars.  What part of 50% drop don't you understand?

3. Executive orders of the last 3 presidents: Obama 163, Bush 291, Clinton 364.

4. Fact: The stimulus saved the American Auto Industry.

Your BS could go on Forever!

@RoosterMcGee @Anse @nayakno  Rooster - the first stimulus was created by G W Bush to bail out the banks.  The deficit was also because of G W Bush and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq - two wars that were basically unfunded and placed a HUGE strain on our nation's economy.  As far as his executive orders it may come as a surprise to you to find out that he has actually issued fewer of them than his most recent predecessors have.  As far as congress is concerned the past 7 years have seen one of the most ineffectual congresses in history - much to the detriment of the American people.

@roguebotanist 1. "Failure" is some of us, especially those in the 60-65 age range, who cannot afford $1200/ month premiums, and do not need maternity coverage. That is called "asinine".

2. The amount of the deficit is difficult to determine, since everyone uses a different set of numbers and there has been no official budget for several years.

3. I don't know. I don't track them. However, it isn't the number that is important, but the particular application of each order.

4. Ford is doing better than the other automakers, and they received no stimulus. GM apparently used the stimulus to find a cure for dementia because, since receiving the handout, it appears they have recalled everything.

Pull your head out.This bozo is worse than W. and Carter combined. The only reason Obama wins the 2nd term he promised free stuff. There are more takers than producers in this country now. Give out free shit and you win. You must be proud.

@roguebotanist @bill.mccormack Actually, it isn't free. What it is, is unavailable until age 65.

If you want to see what dementia looks like, perhaps you should take a quick look in the mirror.
